A microsite is a site or whip-round of pages (usually with its own domain) that is designed as a appurtenance to a larger, more complex site. They are usually designed to pull in much more specialised traffic that would then move through to the main site.
There are some things that you will want to look out for:
A microsite not a doorway page: One of the main issues with microsites is that they should each have some unique content. The distinction between a doorway page and a microsite is the presence of useful content. Here are some ideas:
- Blog
s: Blog
s are great for providing unique content that is useful to users and related to a subject. Installing WordPress has never been easier. Then it’s just a case of writing
the content itself.
- Linkbait: Adding some linkbait (some useful industry based tools, a flash game) is a great way to get your microsite noticed. Then you can link back to your main page and pass off some PageRank.
- Communities: Forums and sites that require users’ input are hard work to get going, but are great microsite content. Product fanbases and queries work well.
Make it clear that this page is related to your main page, but do not copy the styling, content or products/services that your main site has. Doing so will only get the microsite read as duplicate content.
