With so many websites competing in most ecommerce markets, it’s easy for your website to get lost amongst the sea of competition and never truly fulfil its potential. However, with a little SEO knowledge you can help get noticed in search engines and boost your traffic levels.
SEO friendly URLs
Replacing the standard ‘index.php?id=1234&cat=567′, search engine friendly URLs take on a much more descriptive look usually of the form ‘product-name.html’ or something similar. The benefit of search engine friendly URLs include added relevance in search engines, and a much more linkable, clickable URL (potential customers are much more likely to click on a link if the URL describes the content of the page).
Dynamic Header Tags
The header tags comprise of the page title, meta description and meta keywords. Many ecommerce platforms only allow you to configure one set of header tags that apply across the whole website. Dynamic header tags mean you can set unique tags for each page in your site, meaning greater relevance in search engines and an increased likelihood of your inner pages ranking highly.
Unique Product Descriptions
Another problem with the majority of ecommerce websites is that they will use the manufacturer’s product descriptions, meaning search engines end up seeing the same content across all sites selling the same product. If you write unique descriptions for the products you’re selling, there is an increased chance that search engines will rank you higher due to you offering unique content related to the product.
